Stay positive and look after yourself

If you're looking for work, sometimes it can be difficult to remain positive and motivated, although it’s important for you and your family that you stay focused on the future.

The best thing you can do is to look after your own health and wellbeing. Here are some hints and tips for staying positive and looking after yourself.

Ask for help

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Former auto workers can book free, one-on-one appointments with trained counsellors who can provide confidential advice and support across a range of areas. If you feel more comfortable talking to family or friends, they can also be a great source of support, so don’t be afraid to reach out to those closest to you.

Stay fit and healthy
Exercising and eating well are just as important for your mental health, as they are for your physical health. Exercise releases chemicals into your body that make you feel better and help you to think more clearly. It can also get you out into the world and put you in touch with other people, making you feel less lonely. Try an outdoor activity you enjoy such as walking, running or cycling or join a local sporting team or walking group.

Take advantage of opportunities
Keeping positive will be difficult at times, especially if you’re having trouble finding a new job. Try to focus on the things you can control. Take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way as you never know where it might lead. Attend the free workshops and events held at the auto transition centres, or through your local council. You might be surprised what opportunities present themselves when you meet people who have been through a similar situation.

Have a plan for your future
You might want to embark on some future career planning. Seek career guidance, or find a mentor who can help you clarify what you might want to do. Trained career coaches are available as part of the Automotive Workers in Transition Program to help you plan your future.

Be open to where your skills can take you

It’s important to be open to different types of jobs. It might not be what you were doing before, or what you want to do in the future, but it may help you to move toward your dream job. Having a regular wage will reduce your financial stresses, so don’t be afraid to take a ‘right now’ job to help pay the bills and keep your mind active, while you look for something longer term.

Keep yourself motivated
Consider volunteering or finding some other way to stay involved in your local community. These opportunities often lead to formal employment down the track, and they’re a great way to keep focused and positive.
