Jobs First Employment Projects

Develop your skills needed to get a job in the disability, healthcare, hospitality or civil construction sectors, through the Jobs First Employment Projects initiative.

These opportunities are being delivered in partnership with employers and are tailored to give you the skills you need to successfully transition to jobs, in the industries listed below.

The projects are open to all automotive supply chain workers registered for support with the Automotive Workers in Transition Program (AWITP), as well as former GM Holden workers.

Selected projects are also open to partners and family members of auto supply chain workers registered with the AWITP, and former GM Holden workers.

*Please note, these courses are free with no costs deducted from your $2,500 entitlement through the AWITP.

Introduction to a Pharmacy Career

Course details

  • This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in a pharmacy
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • This course is also available for free to family members of ex-GM Holden and automotive supply chain workers
  • You will need to commit to six weeks training.

Course outcome

This course is delivered with the Pharmacy Guild of South Australia who will help connect you to job opportunities through their Network of pharmacies across South Australia.

On completion, you should understand the requirements of the pharmacy assistant role and be able to identify when to refer to a senior staff member or pharmacist. You will also learn a range of retail operational tasks and customer services skills.

Ticket to Civil Construction

Course details

  • This course will provide you with the practical training and tickets to work in the civil construction industry
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • You will need to commit to 5 days per week over 2 weeks.

Course outcome

This course will help you get a job in civil construction with construction employers such as LR&M Constructions, Lend Lease, Protech and Zancott.

Introduction for Cement Trucks

Course details

  • After successful completion, you will have the skills and licences you need to drive cement trucks
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • You will need to commit to 15 days held over 3 to 5 weeks.

Course outcome

This course will help you to gain civil construction employment opportunities with companies including PreMix Concrete, Boral concrete and Direct Mix.

Developing the Future Disability Workforce

Course details

  • This will provide you with a two-day taster of what it is like to work in the disability sector
  • Day 1 will include presentations and talks from those working in the industry, and training in disability awareness
  • Day 2 will give you an opportunity to undertake a work shadow. If you want to know more about the industry or are unsure if it’s the rights fit for you then this is the best way to gain a better insight
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • This opportunity is also available for free to family members of ex-GM Holden and automotive supply chain workers
  • You will need to be available for two consecutive days for this training.

Course outcome

  • This course will help you gain a better understanding of working within the disability sector and the types of jobs available
  • Successful completion will also give you the opportunity to move into the Introduction to the Disability Sector training in January 2018.

Introduction to the Disability Sector

Course details

  • If you are interested in pursuing a career in the disability sector, this course will give you the skills you need to do this
  • You will complete a program that includes class-based learning as well as work experience placements
  • Successful completion of the course will give you an accredited Skill Set-Induction to disability and an Apply First Aid certificate
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • This course is also available for free to partners and family members of ex-GM Holden and automotive supply chain workers
  • You will need to commit to eight weeks training part-time.

Course outcome

This course will help you to gain employment with disability service providers such as Minda Inc, Anglicare and Barkuma.

KickStart to Hospitality

Course details

  • This will provide you with skills, accredited training and work experience to help you get a job in the hospitality and gaming industry
  • The course is free if you are registered with the AWITP or have previously worked at GM Holden
  • This course is also available for free to family members of ex-GM Holden and automotive supply chain workers
  • You will need to commit to two weeks training, including work experience.

Course outcome

This course is delivered by Club and Hospitality Training Service who are the training partners of Clubs SA. They will work with their members and clients to help you to secure a job.
